1) Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Plot Summary: Opal is having a hard time being the new girl in a new city. She finds a scrappy and loving terrier in the local shopping centre, and they quickly become bonded. Opal's new dog, Winn-Dixie, helps her find belonging in her new community and comforts her amidst the pain of her mother's departure.

Appeal: Aimed at children ages 9-12, this story is an evergreen favourite of children for it's emotionally deep but optimistic outlook and memorable characters. As a child I absolutely loved reading this title and then watching the movie. Offering a supplementary media in conjunction with reading can be an encouraging way to engage children who are hesitant to read.

Limitations and Weaknesses: While this title offers comforting insights into the realities of an absentee parent, this subject may be personally relevant to some young readers and should be handled with care. Additionally, this story does not offer a wide range of cultural representation.
